Stripe - 3D Secure: Card authentication

3-D-Secure is an additional security check for credit card payments. During a booking, Stripe may ask the payer to confirm payment through a banking app, code, or another method.

edoobox hands payment over to Stripe and then receives the payment status. Stripe and the payer’s bank decide whether a 3-D-Secure check is necessary.

Understand the process and payment status

  1. The payer starts the card payment in edoobox.
  2. Stripe and the bank decide whether additional authentication is needed.
  3. If required, authorization opens through a banking app, code, or bank page.
  4. After the return, edoobox checks the PaymentIntent again and records the payment only once an appropriate successful status is received.
  5. Only then are payment status, invoice, and booking completion processed further.

If authorization is cancelled or expires, payment is not automatically successful. Check the booking, invoice, and transaction before starting another payment. This avoids unnecessary repeated attempts and helps distinguish a pending payment from a cancelled one or one successfully recorded.

When 3-D-Secure appears

  • The bank requires Strong Customer Authentication.

  • Stripe determines that the payment requires a check.

  • Your Stripe rules require additional authentication.

  • The payment method or card’s country requires a check.

Check Stripe rules

Rules in Stripe can control when 3-D-Secure is requested. Change them only if you understand their effect on acceptance rates, security, and abandoned bookings.

For European card payments, the connection to Strong Customer Authentication is especially important.

Test the payment process

After changes, perform a test booking. Check whether the redirect to Stripe works, authentication completes, and edoobox then shows the correct payment status.

Use case: Confirm a credit card payment with a banking app

A participant pays for a course by credit card. Their bank requires approval in the app. After approval, they return to edoobox. Admins check the successfully recorded payment and actual booking status. If the place reservation has expired or other booking requirements apply, bank approval alone is not yet a booking confirmation.

Use case: Approval is cancelled in the banking app

A participant closes the banking app before confirming. Admins first check the booking, invoice, and Stripe PaymentIntent. Because no successful payment was recorded, the participant can reopen the payment process. Had the first attempt already succeeded, no second payment attempt would be started.

If authentication does not complete

  • Ask the payer to complete the process in the banking app, with the SMS code, or in the browser window.
  • Then check payment and booking statuses in edoobox instead of relying solely on the visible completion page.
  • In Stripe, check the PaymentIntent and the reason for rejection, cancellation, or a pending action.
  • Start a new payment only once you have established that the previous attempt was not successfully recorded.
  • For recurring problems, check Stripe rules, the card’s country, test mode, and the general SCA guide.

Saved card and automatic payments

A saved card does not guarantee that every later charge will succeed without user interaction. For automatic charges, the bank may require authentication again or decline the payment. If an error occurs, first check the actual payment status and outstanding invoice; an automatic attempt alone is not proof of payment.

For automatic charges for edoobox account costs, Automatic payment with a saved credit card describes setup, default and backup cards, and error handling. This is a separate process from paying for a participant booking.

Interpret Stripe statuses correctly

StatusMeaning for your checks
requires_actionThe payer must complete another action, such as bank authorization.
requires_payment_methodThe payment requires a suitable payment method or a newly confirmed attempt.
processingProcessing is still underway. Wait for the final result.
succeededThe payment process has completed successfully. Also check its assignment in edoobox.

Stripe describes these states in Payment status updates. After refunds or subsequent disputes, also check the transaction and its history.
